VEGETARIANISM: AN ALIEN VISIT
AN ALIEN VISIT
Thoth: -Hello earth dweller. I’m Thoth, the commander of this
spaceship. What are your names?
Jacob: -I am Jacob. This is Mary, my wife.
Mary: -What a surprise. You speak our language. What planet
do you come from?
Thoth: -We come from planet Worth.
Jacob: -What a huge spaceship! How many passengers does it
take?
Thoth: -There are four seats for the crew and there is space
for half a million corpses.
Mary: -Corpses?
Thoth: -We are here to get new provisions.
Jacob: -What kind of
provisions?
Thoth: -Earth dwellers.
Mary: -Do you eat earth dwellers?
Thoth: -We love earth dwellers. My favourite dish is Earth dwellers with a sweet and sour sauce.
Jacob: -Earth dwellers
with a sweet and sour sauce?
Thoth: -Yes, I love it.
Mary: -How are you going to get those corpses?
Thoth: -By inviting people to visit our spaceship. Would you
like to see its interior?
Jacob: -No, thank you. What’s the meaning of those symbols on
your spaceship?
Thoth: It is the name of this spaceship in worth dweller script.
It says, “Final Judgement”.
Jacob: -Final Judgement?
Thoth: -It was Zeus’ idea.
Jacob: -Zeus?
Thoth: -He is the oldest on our planet.
Mary: -The gods rule your planet?
Thoth: -All planet Worth dwellers are gods.
Mary: -And you eat earth dwellers?
Toth: -We do.
Mary: -But you shouldn’t. We earth dwellers don’t like to be
eaten!
Toth: -But we worth dwellers like to eat earth dwellers!
Mary: -But that is terrible.
Toth: -Why? You eat other creatures, don’t you?
Mary: -Yes, but they are different.
Toth: -No they aren’t. Are you religious?
Jacob: -Mary is religious. I’m not. Oh, wait a second! Why
did you ask? Is it because you don’t eat earth dwellers who are religious?
Toth: -We don’t differentiate between believers and
non-believers. Tell me Jacob, since you don’t believe in religion, you believe
in science, don’t you?
Jacob: -Yes, but science is not something that you believe
in. Science is about natural laws that have been proved to be right.
Toth: -No it is not. Science is about natural laws that you
believe that have been proved to be right. We neither care about religion nor
about science. What matters to us is wisdom, which is processing information
right. Have you heard about Charles Darwin?
Jacob: -Of course I have. Toth: -He demonstrated that all creatures on planet Earth have
a common ancestor.
Jacob: -That is correct.
Toth: -Then why do you eat other creatures?
Jacob: -Because that was a
long time ago.
Toth: -We and you have a common ancestor, but that was also
a long time ago.
Mary: -I had no idea.
Toth: -That was before your ancestors changed their diet and
we expelled them from Worth.
Mary: -You expelled our ancestors for changing their diet?
Toth: -Yes, we did. Mary, do you have children?
Mary: -I have two: Sophie is thirteen and Jesus is less than
a year.
Toth: -I love spit-roast baby. Crispy on the outside, tender
flesh inside, absolutely delicious. But it is a lot of work to get that crispy
crust. That is why we only have spit-roast baby on Doomsday.
Jacob: -Doomsday?
Toth: -Every 5779 planet Earth years we celebrate Doomsday.
According to our calendar, that will be three days after we get back to Worth
from our humanitarian mission. We then get together with the family and eat
spit-roast baby. It is a tradition.
Mary: -But that is a terrible tradition.
Toth: -I thought earth dwellers never questioned traditions.
Jacob: -Why don’t you eat cows, pigs and chickens? That’s
what we do. We have a lot of them. We can sell some to you if you want. Then
you don’t have to eat us.
Toth: -One should eat a bit of everything! Isn’t that what
earth dwellers who eat other earth creatures say to earth dwellers who don’t
eat other earth creatures?
Jacob: -Who told you that? Have you been talking to a
vegetarian?
Mary: -Are there worth dwellers who don’t eat earth dwellers?
Toth: -All worth dwellers eat earth dwellers, but we never
eat those who don’t eat other earth creatures. We are fair: we treat a creature
the way it treats other creatures!
Mary: -Worth dwellers don’t eat vegetarians?
Toth: -You got it.
Mary: -Sophie is a vegetarian.
Toth: -We won’t eat her.
Mary: -But Sophie loves her baby brother Jesus.
Toth: -Sophie will have babies of her own and they will not
think of eating other earth creatures because when our humanitarian mission is accomplished
there will no longer be earth dwellers who do so.
Jacob: -I hope that you don’t eat earth dwellers who are religious?
My wife is a Christian and I was raised a Christian.
Toth: -But you are no longer a Christian, are you Jacob? What
matters is not what you were in the past, but what you are today.
Jacob: -Will you spare Mary
for being a Christian?
Toth: -Your wife is not a Christian. She only thinks she is
a Christian.
Mary: -But I am a Christian. I go to mass every Sunday.
Toth: -That doesn’t make you a Christian, Mary. Real Christians
don’t eat other creatures. Have you not read that Jesus Christ said that he had
not come to change the law? And doesn’t one of the Ten Commandments say, “Do not kill”?
Mary: -But that means not to kill other people.
Toth: -Mary, isn’t it obvious that if it meant Do not to kill other people! it would
say, Do not kill other people?
Jacob: -But we thought it did.
Nobody told us that it is forbidden to kill whatever creature. The priests did
not explain that to us.
Toth: -Do not blame the priests. You have a brain, don’t
you? And you can read, don’t you?
Mary: -But we assumed that commandment meant Do not kill other people.
Toth: -Look, we are going to sacrifice you NOT because you
eat other earth dwellers, but because you have NOT figured out that Do not kill! refers to all creatures. We
are going to sacrifice you because you have no empathy. For us, creatures without
a soul are just meat.
Mary: We are not just meat. We have a soul.
Toth: -I’m afraid that the other creatures on earth disagree
with you.
Mary: -Please, don’t eat us. We can learn. Teach us empathy.
Give us a chance.
Toth: -We inspired several fairy tales that teach people
empathy. Some people got their message, others didn’t.
Jacob: -I thought fairy tales were just entertainment.
Toth: -A lot of you earth dwellers only think of having fun.
Some of you even have fun torturing other creatures.
Mary: -We don’t.
Toth: -But you eat other creatures. People who don’t understand
what Hansel and Gretel tries to
transmit have no soul.
Mary: -I was terrified when that evil witch put Hansel in a
cage to fatten him because she planned to eat him later. I was so happy that
Gretchen liberated him.
Toth: -Why didn’t this fairy tale make you empathize with
the caged animals that earth dwellers fatten up because they plan to eat them
later?
Mary: -Nobody told me to do that.
Jacob: -Please forgive us.
Toth: -You have had plenty of chances to learn empathy. The
time has come to get rid of selfish people. People who continuously have to be
told what is good and what is evil, because they can’t figure that out for
themselves, are too much a burden for the universe.
Mary: -Please save Jesus. He is only 8 months old. He’s
innocent
Toth: -No he’s not. All people on earth have been here several
times before. You have all had many chances to improve your behaviour.
Jacob: -Are you telling us that we are the reincarnations of
people who lived in the past?
Toth: -If you had processed information right you would have
realized that yourself.
Mary: -I don’t believe in reincarnation.
Toth: -People who fall hurt themselves whether they believe
in the law of gravity or not. All earth dwellers have been here several times
before.
Jacob: -Will we reincarnate after you eat us?
Toth: -Those who have lost their soul don’t reincarnate. This
humanitarian mission is called the Last
Judgement because by eating unworthy earth dwellers we restore harmony on
planet Earth.
Mary: -Look at those bright stars in the East! They are
coming closer.
Toth: -They are not stars, but the other spaceships of our humanitarian
mission.
Mary: -Oh, my God!
Toth: -Yes Mary, can I help you?
Mary: -I wasn’t referring to you, dammit.

VARIED EXPERIENCES
Bruno
Lernout was born in 1957 in Duffel (Belgium). He is the third of eight children
(he has three brothers and four sisters). He got a Catholic upbringing, but
turned his back to religion when he was only 13 years old, because he disliked
the hypocrisy of the church and did not understand why so many people got
killed in the name of God.
He
studied Landscape Gardening. He planned to do his internship in Lubeck
(Germany), but did not pass the exams. Instead of moving north, he travelled
south. While preparing for his second exams, a friend suggested to do the wine
harvest in southern France, and he promised to accompany him in case he did not
pass.
They
hitchhiked and found work in Gignac, near Montpellier. Afterwards they did a
second wine harvest in St. Emilion-Puisseguin, near Bordeaux. Then they went to
see some acquaintances in the Pyrenees. When his friend suggested to go home,
Bruno pointed to the blue sky and suggested to follow the sun. They hichhiked
to Barcelona, Madrid, Toledo, Granada, and then to Morocco.
In
Marbella he met a girl and promised her to see her again after his trip to
Morocco. He does, but runs out of money a few days later and has to return to
Belgium. This time he promises his girlfriend to look immediately for a job and
to save enough money in order to return to Marbella as soon as possible.
Back
in Marbella a few months later, he learns that he needs a permit to work in
Spain. He does not know how to get one. This is quite frustrating, because he
knows 5 languages and lives in a tourist town where there is a demand for
people who speak several languages.
Since
he can’t work, he hangs out with young people who are on vacation or who are on
their way to Morocco and who experiment with drugs. Because of this he doesn’t
react in the best way when he and his girlfriend face a problem. They separate,
but he stays in Marbella. He finally finds work for a Belgian tour operator and
gets a work permit. First he goes to Mallorco, then to Tenerife, and two years
later to Marbella.
During
the ten years that he lives there (1981-1990), he meets people from many
different countries. In this tourist town, which is a favourite resort for the
rich, every night is Saturday night. People drink a lot and drugs are easily
available. When he realizes that he is damaging his health, he stays away from
alcohol for a several months.
At
first he works as a guide for a touroperator. Later he creates a publicity
leaflet and he also starts a paper shop specialized in greetingcards, posters,
stationery, etc. Since he is self-employed, he gets a residence permit.
However, the store does not work and he has to close it. Getting a work permit
is still difficult when you are not self-employed and since he owes a friend money he returns to Belgium for
a few months.
He
had dreamed to become rich before he turned 40, but now he has to work as a
dishwasher, a gardener and an unskilled worker. And to get a job he has to
compete with immigrants from North Africa and Eastern Europe. This is a
difficult time for him, but offers him a more realistic view on society. In
order to get a better job he learns different office skills (typewriting /
computer programs).
When
he returns to Spain he chooses Madrid. He has gotten fed up with the artificial
life of holiday resorts and now wants to become familiar with the real Spain.
Although
Spain now forms part of the European community, he still has problems finding a
legal job. He answers an advertisement and gets invited for an interview. A
week later he begins to work at a small advertising company, but without a
contract. Twice a year this company organizes an Award Celebration dedicated to
Excellence in Corporate Image. During these conventions he has to wear an
expensive suit and tie and to his surprise he discovers that people now treat
him with respect.
This
job also teaches him that people often do not read what a text really says, but
only what they think it says, and that it is therefore easy to creates false
expectations and deceive people without having to lie. Although most recipients
of the awards are happy with their trophy, for which they have paid good money,
occasionally a company feels cheated and he feels terrible. Therefore, when
years later he is offered a percentage of the benefits, he decides to leave the
company. He considers that this would make him directly responsible for what
that company does.
The
decision to quitte that job is also the result of a crisis – he is almost 40 -
which originally started by a physical ailment: a pain in the knee. After
seeing several traditional doctors, who did not manage to help him, he
consulted a holistic healer. This man told him about the union of mind and body
and said he could solve the problem with his knee in a short time, but that the
real problem was a mental block.
The
holistic treatment he is given, which includes among others the trace element
'gold', helps him to remember events that happened during your childhood. He
soon begins to give more importance to his subconscious – many years ago he had
quit smoking because of a dream and he had had several other interesting dreams
– and gets interested in the past and why things happen the way they do.
Eventually he starts questionning everything he has ever learned. Since new
scientific theories often contradict previous theories, he realizes that a lot
of ideas may be false. This makes him decide to try to discover his own truths.
When
one doubts everything, nothing is clear, which makes that everything is again
possible. Therefore, he not only wonders whether the ideas of science are true,
but also whether religions, legends and myths are based on reality.
When
his subconscious tells him to become a vegetarian, he wonders where it got that
idea from. He discovers that it has to do with what he was taught about
paradise when he was a child. He suddenly remembers that the first time he
heard that story he had come to the conclusion that since Adam and Eve were
friends with the animals before the expulsion from paradise, to be re-admitted
into paradise, the obious thing to do would be to become again friends with the
animals and, therefore, to stop eating them. He remembers to have been very proud to have found the
solution to this problem, but a bit later he had assumed to be mistaken, since he
considered that adults know everything better, and they gave him animals to
eat.
When
he realized where the idea to become a vegetarian came fom, he consulted a
Bible and looked up what it exactly says about vegetarianism. It surprised him
that he had once associated this book with vegetarianism but later learned to
associate this diet with Eastern religions.
Reading
Genesis, the first book of the Bible, he learned that in the beginning God had
recommended Adam and Eve to eat vegetables and that only many generations
later, after the Flood, God gave Noah and his family permission to eat other
creatures.
His
work for that Communication Company that offered awards to Excellence in
Corporate Image enabled him to read this book with a critical mind. He thus realized
that there is something not quite right with that second dietary law. When he
asked why God changed His mind, he discovered that these texts guard a secret
and that God, the main protagonist of this book, is not a capricious being, but
based on the principle cause and effect.
Whereas
a lot of people consider that Genesis is full of myths, he realized that it is
the origin of the three monotheistic religions, and that asking why we have
problems with the other people and with our environment is the same as asking
what the forbidden fruit refers to.
He
now has a good reason for studying this book, since by reflecting upon the
evolution of humanity he has come to the conclusion that a society that does
not live in harmony - like ours - is bound to destroy itself. The evolution of
technology not only makes weapons continually become more sophisticated - and
nowadays enables mankind to destroy itself -, but also enables an increasingly
smaller percentage of the world population to appropiate an increasingly larger
percentage of all resources, thus increasing the tension between the different
groups of people and between them and their environment.
After
discovering these secrets in the Bible he decides to write a book, but each
time he finishes one version he is not satisfied and changes its structure and
focus. This process allows him to discover more secrets in the Bible and to
obtain a better understanding of it. Soon he is not only interested in what
this book says, but also wants to discover why others interpret it erroneously.
Having
discovered at the origin of the Bible an idea (vegetarianism) which is
considered typical for certain Eastern religions - makes him wonder whether
perhaps all philosophies and religions have safeguarded important ideas for the
future. This makes him see that to understand the Bible one may have to be
familiar with ideas such as reincarnation and karma.
Since
it takes him such a long time to write his book, and he eventually runs out of
money, he starts working as a guide for walking holidays. For years he had gone
hiking on Sundays and one of his new Friends, who organized tours for
foreigners, needed someone to help him. He loves the job, because he likes
nature – he started going to the mountains to recharge energy - and the people
on these tours, mostly Americans, are very interesting. A lot of them have gone
to universities like Harvard, Yale, or Princeton and some are very rich.
Thanks
to this job he becomes aware of his prejudices about Americans and about the
rich. He learns a lot from them. He learns, for instance, to be grateful when you are happy with a
service. During these tours he often gets the chance to discuss his ideas.
Since people do not always agree with him, he learn to broaden his views and to
improve his arguments. Some know the Bible well - many customers are Jewish –
and he learns a lot from them.
Besides
working as a guide he also occasionally works for the courts as an intepreter.
At one job he deals with privileged people, at
the other with marginal people (drug dealers, thieves, etc.). These
contacts are short but affect him a lot since he imagines himself in the place
of these criminals.
At
first he only works as a guide in Spain, but with the season being so short -
from early April to late October - and it being too hot to walk during the
summer, he starts guiding during these months Silk Road expeditions with groups
of Spaniards. Thanks to this he becomes interested in the culture, history and
religion of these people.
Around
the same time he becomes interested in the camino de Santiago. In 2003, the
year of the 'Prestige', he walks from Roncesvalles to Santiago, and then to
Finisterre and Muxía. He enjoys walking for a long in the same direction and
watch the landscape and people change gradually. When he arrives at the end, he
realizes that for having walked so many kilometers each day, and meeting almost
every night different people he has not had a good interaction with his fellow
pilgrims. Therefore, he repeats this experience the following year. This time
he starts at Somport on February 27 and with more than half a meter of snow. A
few weeks later he has befriended several pilgrims and every night he meets up
with them. Just before reaching Galicia he has a revelatory dream thanks to the
interaction with these people. He realizes immediately that this has nothing to
do with magic, but with how his subconscious works. Now that he knows why he
had certain nightmares he can do something about it to avoid having them again.
He
starts working on the camino de Santiago because he likes the contact with
pilgrims that also ask many questions. Some years later he moves to the camino
de Santiago. He chooses Arzúa, 40km from Santiago, and begins a shop that
offers food for pilgrims and food for thought for spiritual pilgrim. His aim is
to contact the spiritual pilgrims - on top of the shelves are messages that
form a philosophical journey - but without disturbing other pilgrims. In six
months he gets customers from over 65 different countries and meets several
pilgrims who are very interested in his ideas. But he has to close down because
he looses money. He does not care too much since he has discovered better ways
to divulge his ideas. The following year he begins exhibting his messages on
the camino to Santiago.
Heidi,
who lives in Tabernavella, offers coffee and cake to pilgrims – the best
zuccini and walnut cake of the whole camino - and lets him exhibit his
philosophy. His messages encourage pilgrims to quetion themselves as much as
they question other people. He talks about philosophy with those who are
interested and offers tourist information to those that aren’t. Since he has
lived in different places in Spain, and has met people from many different
countries and worked in several fields, he easily finds something to talk about
with pilgrims to make them feel as ease.
ADAM & EVE WERE VEGETARIANS
This first book
of the Bible says that people once
lived in harmony, that they put an end to it by eating a forbidden fruit, and that
ten generations later they almost completely destroyed themselves. It thus recognizes the most important lesson
mankind has to learn: the fact that a society that doesn’t live in harmony is
eventually bound to destroy itself. The author of Genesis foresaw something
that we can only comprehend today.
When we
reflect upon evolution we see that technology makes weapons become
continually more sophisticated, while at the same time it enables an always
smaller percentage of the world population to appropriate an always larger
percentage of all available resources, thus increasing the tension between the
different groups of people, and between them and their environment. Now that we
have weapons of mass-destruction, mankind’s self-destruction can occure any
moment.
To assure mankind’s survival,
we have to ask why we have conflicts, which is the same as asking what the
forbidden fruit refers to. By telling us that Adam and Eve were vegetarians
before their expulsion from paradise, Genesis associates harmony with a
vegetarian diet and suggests that a change in mankind’s diet put an end to
harmony.
Jews, Christians and Muslims long for paradise because
of Genesis, but ignore that Genesis associates paradise – a harmonious society –
with a vegetarian diet. This is because they consider that the Bible holds the
word of God and have a ‘pagan’ understanding of God.
People who see God as a father (or ruler) who must
be obeyed at all times, allow God to be capricious. They accept that He can
forbid something or change His mind without any reason. What matters for them is
not why there was a forbidden fruit or what it referred to, but the fact that
God forbade eating it. Instead of seeing the end of paradise as a result of
eating the forbidden fruit, they regard it as the punishment for having
disobeyed God.
God first prescribed a vegetarian diet to Adam and Eve, but later
allowed Noah to eat meat. This is why Jews,
Christians and Muslims eat other creatures, thus ignoring that Genesis
associates harmony with a vegetarian diet. However, this second dietary law conceals a reality to
those who do not ask why God changed his mind.
People who
don’t question the God4 in Genesis, base themselves on this second dietary
law to ignore the former. They are so pleased that God allowed them to eat meat,
that they do not care why He changed His mind. They do not pay attention to the
fact that God gave Noah the second law after exclaiming: "Never again will
I curse the earth because of man, because the plans of the human heart are evil
from their childhood. Never again will I hurt every living thing as I have
done."
God was clearly
not pleased with Noah. He had a good reason for being disappointed. He had
asked Noah to take the animals with him on the ark so that also they would
survive the flood, and the first thing Noah did upon landing was to offer a
sacrifice of some of those animals.
The second
dietary law says: "Everything that lives and moves will be yours to eat”.
It not only allows eating animals, but also humans. Since later it says:
"But you will not eat the meat with its soul, that is, with its blood. And
I promise to demand account of your own blood. I shall demand it of every
animal and of man. All of them and each of them will be demanded account for
the human soul. He who sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed,
for in the image of God was man created", God allows Noah and his
descendants to eat other creatures to recover their human soul. Once they recover
their human soul, they no longer need to eat other creatures.
Christians justify
their omnivore diet by referring to the second dietary law, but eat blood although
this second dietary law forbids doing so. This demonstrates that one can ignore
in the Bible whatever one wants to ignore.
A lot of
people claim that the opposite is true: that one can
find whatever one wants to find in the Bible. The
fact that in the past people have used the Bible both to defend and to condemn
the same idea –slavery, alcohol, etc.– shows that this ‘sacred book’ can indeed
be interpreted in many ways. But that doesn’t mean that one can find whatever
one wants to find in it. For instance, one cannot find that in the days
of Paradise Adam and Eve ate animals.
What is true, however, is that one can ignore in the Bible –and in life in
general– whatever one wants to ignore. For instance, one can ignore that God forbade eating blood
or that Genesis associates paradise with a vegetarian diet.
In the
dietary law that God gives to Noah, He refers to the dietary law given earlier on
to Adam and Eve. While in this second law God indicates: "Everything that
lives and moves will be yours to eat: I give you everything, the same as I have given you the green herbs"
(Gn9:3), in the first law He says: "Behold, I have given you all
seed-bearing plants that are upon the face of the whole earth, as well as every
tree that bears fruit that holds seeds, this will be your food. And to all the
wild animals on earth, and to all the birds of heaven and all the living
creatures that creep along the ground, all
the green herbs I give them as food." (Gn1:29-30) The fact that God
had given the green herbs to the animals means that he regarded Noah as an
animal. This explains why God tells Noah and his family to claim their human
blood (his human soul).
That Genesis
associates paradise with a vegetarian diet should not surprise us. Harmony
among people requires empathy –Hillel, a famous Jewish religious leader of the
first century BC, said the Bible teaches us not do to others what is hateful to
us– and vegetarians are obviously able to put themselves in the place of others,
since that is one of the reasons for not eating animals. Besides, paradise is
not only for humans (or only for the rich, or for people from a particular race
or with a particular religion, etc...). Living in harmony means to respect the
environment and the other people and the other creatures of course form part of
it.
Since our childhood
we get used to a particular diet and so it is so hard to question what we eat
or do not eat. That is why Genesis does not openly condemn eating other
creatures. In case the Bible had done so, pagans would never have accepted it as
a 'sacred book'.
The defenders of the omnivore diet can oppose that if
vegetarianism was really an important issue, God would have forbidden eating
other creatures. But they ignore that in the days of paradise God neither forbade to kill, to
steal, to lie, etc. That one prohibition –staying away from the forbidden
fruit– was apparently enough to guarantee harmony. Keeping themselves to that
single rule enabled them to respect the environment, the other humans and the other
creatures.
We can
wonder whether eating the forbidden fruit started a chainreaction of violence
leading to more violence5. When we reflect upon history we see that
we continuosly make the same mistakes, which means that we do not learn
everything there is to learn from our experiences6 and there is thus
something wrong with our understanding of reality and therefore as well as with
our perception of reality7. To find out why we have conflicts, we
only have to ask what substances alter our perception of reality in such a way
that we focus so much on certain aspects that we ignore others…

1 Science doesn’t contradict the
Bible, but only a particular interpretation of that book. Adam and Eve, for
instance, do not represent the first people, but only the first people that ate
the forbidden fruit and thus put an end to harmony.
2 Genesis is a sacred book because it
holds secrets.The word ‘sacred’ has the same origin as ‘secret’ and derives from the latin
verb ‘segregare’. Our ancestors called the part of the temple that only the
high priest could enter ‘sacred’ because it was ‘segregated’ (separated) from
the rest. Since what is segregated conceals something from other people, the
ideas ‘sacred’ and ‘secret’ were associated with each other from the very
beginning.
3 Mystics associate the Greek words ‘genesis’ (beginning) and ‘gnosis’ (hidden wisdom / comprehension) with each other because they have the same consonants.
4. We can consider the forces that govern the universe as God. There are
many laws of nature, but all are based on the principle of cause and effect.
